What is your professional inspiration: To make a difference in the lives of individuals every day – helping both man- and animal-kind alike. Ten years ago, when my father was diagnosed with colon cancer, the treatment during his remaining months were based on test results that used blood products made at Lampire. Over a decade ago, a young man was protected from biological warfare agents as his troops stormed the Kuwait airport during Desert Storm because Lampire made the correct antibodies for testing. And today he is the company’s New Business Development manager.

Long-term professional goal: To continue to maintain a high-quality organization and make an impact on the field of biotechnology. The success of the Lampire organization is dependent on our high-quality professionals. High-quality employees lead to superior customer service for our clients. Robert S. Donaldson
CEO
WS Lee & Sons
How long have you been in your current position: Since December 2005
What is your professional inspiration: Lee Food Service management and employees inspired me this year. They faced seemingly insurmountable financial and workplace challenges, the threat of losing their livelihoods, and a volatile public-opinion climate due to the company’s Chapter 11 filing. These brave individuals retrenched, fortified the company, and were determined to see our challenges through as we emerge from bankruptcy. That’s inspiring!
Professional advice: Make it a priority to serve your community, whatever your professional position. I believe we all owe “civic rent,” and my spouse and I both try to model that belief in our community. Paying your civic rent will enable you to reap not only the deep personal satisfaction that can come only from participating in something greater than yourself, but also immeasurable professional-growth opportunities for your company.
Long-term professional goal: To lead Lee out of Chapter 11; grow the company profitably; provide our employees a great place to work, with opportunities for enrichment and growth; and achieve our “purpose.” That purpose is to be an exceptional customer-service provider, which leads to prosperity in our community.

TOP ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2006:
• The City View, at the top of the Inclined Plane in Johnstown, has made a “positive impact on the number of people riding on the Inclined Plane.” Low ridership had put the Johnstown icon in danger of closing. “We’ve reversed that trend,” he said, with more riders this year than in the past decade.
• The Laskys were honored as the Medium Employer of the Year by the Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities for their “outstanding contributions and commitment to diversifying and enriching Pennsylvania’s workforce.”

PROFESSIONAL ADVICE:
It’s not easy, being in business – there’ll be a lot of bad years. You must stick to it and make more good decisions than bad, and hope to make your own luck through experience.
LONG-TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: I would like to see the company get bigger. We already sell our frozen dough to 19 states. I’d like to see the business carried on with good energy, if not by me, certainly by my successor.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Vendor of the Year award from Vocelli Pizza in 2001, and from Italian Oven chains in 1996.

Matthew Masiello, MD, MPH
Vice president
Conemaugh Health System
How long have you been in your current position: I’ve been serving as a vice-president in the Conemaugh Health System for two years and Director of Conemaugh’s Office of Community Health for eight years. I also direct the Laurel Highlands Clinic for Children with Special Needs.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: Years ago, when I helped direct pediatric critical-care units, it was quite distressing to see so many families suffering because their children had been victims of injuries and accidents that could have been prevented. Also, having the privilege to travel to other countries, I’ve observed how European healthcare systems prioritize the health and well-being of their citizens. With strong leadership, we can do the same in this country. The work of the World Health Organization in developing a Health Promoting Hospital Network has certainly inspired me to work toward improving the health needs of the children and adults in our communities as well as the staff and patients of our health system.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE: Hospitals can cure illnesses but must also get into the business of promoting health and preventing disease. If hospitals aspire to be a community partner, then they must be honest and sincere in this commitment. The way to accomplish this is to develop a mission statement that promotes corporate strategies that will address the physical, social, and mental wellbeing of the people they serve. As hospitals would hire a cardiologist, surgeon, or pediatrician to service those respective needs, they must also realize the benefit of having public-health professionals on staff to develop state-of-the-art health promotion programs that benefit the hospital staff, patients, and community. There is a return on investment!
LONG-TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: My goal is to be able to coordinate the development of the U.S. Network of Health Promoting Hospitals. Partnering and sharing ideas with our European colleagues on ways to improve the health of our communities would serve as a fine international, collaborative effort.

REASON FOR NOMINATION:
“Teresa O’Neal is Juniata County’s most significant mover and shaker, and is an incredible lady who is very busy,” said Jim Tunall, president of the Juniata Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. O’Neal credits her father being owner of the Long Brothers Auctioneers as a major factor in her learning the skills needed to excel at her present position. The knowledge and experience gained from participating in family auctions, becoming an apprentice auctioneer, and working in the public eye all came together to develop her unusual talent for providing superior customer service. O’Neal has worked hard to enroll Juniata County in a special program offered by the National Association of Counties (NACo). Juniata County, as a NACo member will be able to provide any Juniata County citizen with a special Drug Prescription Discount Card. When asked about her role as county commissioner, O’Neal concluded, “Of all the different jobs I have had in state government, being self-employed, and in the private sector, this is the most difficult job I have ever had, due to the many complex issues that arise on a daily basis. But, it is also the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.”

Jan R. J. de Vries, MD
Physician, family medicine
Medical Associates of Boswell Inc.
How long have you been in your current position:
I started medical private practice in Boswell on July 17, 1962 – incorporated in 1968 as Medical Associates of Boswell. I retired from the practice Sept. 1, 2005. I am now licensed as "active retired" in Pennsylvania. Two younger family physicians now own and manage that practice.
What is your professional inspiration: My professional inspiration came from the time I spent carrying food to hospital-patients in the Japanese camp, at the end of WW II – and the words from one of the professors (Internal Medicine) in Leiden: “Treat each one of your patients as you want your father, mother, brother, sister to be treated.” I aimed to be a competent physician, showing that I care, and being available as well as at all possible. In reaching for that goal, I have been most consistently supported by my wife, nee Klasina Rodenburg.
Professional advice: A motto in the lecture-hall of Internal Medicine was: "The patient is the center of the medical universe, around which all our work revolves and toward which all our efforts tend,” quoting Dr. Murphy (late of Chicago). My advice is to treat everyone, patients (or other “clients”) with obvious personal attention and respect, and personnel (and co-workers) in the same way. Find the difficult balance in leadership, of delegating tasks to others, while still remaining acutely aware of the “workings,” even into some detail.
Long-term professional goal: I did reach my “long-term, professional, goals” when I retired last year. They were threefold: be the best doctor I could be, work in an area where I was needed, and find a good place to educate our children. I owe much of my professional achievements to a long list of wise, older colleagues, and to the American Academy of Family Physicians, to keep me in touch with new developments.
Top accomplishment in 2006:
The “top accomplishment,” which fell into my lap quite unexpectedly, was the Apollo Award, given to me by the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and the Cambria County Medical Society, last fall. (The award was given to honor his charitable and educational efforts in the community, including missions in Haiti and New York City.)
