Gregory F. Krug

President
Lampire Biological Laboratories Inc.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: Cofounded Lampire in 1977 and completed total acquisition in 1979.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: To make a difference in the lives of individuals everyday. He has experienced the impact of Lampire products on a very personal level when his wife’s pregnancy with their first child was confirmed using a pregnancy test kit with antibodies produced at Lampire. Ten years ago, when Mr. Krug’s father was diagnosed with colon cancer, the treatments during his remaining months were based on test results that used blood products made at Lampire. Over a decade ago a young man was protected from biological warfare agents as his troops stormed the Kuwait airport during Desert Storm because Lampire made the correct antibodies for testing. And today he is the company’s New Business Development Manager.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: Be like a duck, stay calm on the surface and paddle like heck underneath.
Do onto others, as they do to you.
Remember people are our biggest asset (employees).
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: To continue to maintain a high quality organization and make an impact on the field of biotechnology. The success of the Lampire organization is dependent on our high quality professionals. High quality employees lead to superior customer service for our clients. We believe in the quality of our organization, our battle cry is, “Get it right the first time, every time.” This is a company-driven team goal.

Nancy J. Pyle

President
Heartland Hall Inc.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: I have been president of the Heartland Hall since the organization of the corporation in July 2004. We began building the Heartland’s Conference Center in November 2004, and opened July 2005.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: My inspiration has come from experiencing the actual need of an elegant banquet and meeting facility in the area of Bedford County through working in medical public relations and being an organizer of different fundraising events. The intersection of the Pennsylvania Turkpike, I-99 & Route 56 makes this location ideal, but having a loving father that is a professional architectural engineer with conference center savvy was quite the inspiration!
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: When choosing a business field, be sure that it is one that you greatly enjoy and one that will be profitable. Without a passion for your profession, you will become less motivated to continually improve your operation. And, without a prosperous business, it will not be able to function and become a burden rather than a blessing to the community.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: My long term professional goal includes making the Heartlands a continued success in itself, and also expanding into other hospitality services connected with the Heartland Hall. Being a Family Nurse Practitioner, I plan to continue caring for people’s medical needs on a part-time basis, along with their needs in our community regarding hospitality!
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT/AWARDS WON THIS YEAR: Opening Heartland Hall.

You’ll enjoy doing it a lot more if you’re proud of the result, and you should be proud of every job you do if you do it well.

Keller Engineers Inc.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: 12 Years.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: My Dad, Tom Lobb. Never finishing high school, he worked as a laborer for the PRR for nearly 50 years. Although he was often laid off, came home dirty and tired and did not make much money, he never complained, saying he liked his work. He loved me, took me hunting and fishing, taught me about the outdoors and somehow he and my Mom saved enough money to send me to college.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: I truly believe to have a successful career, you must enjoy what you do. And if you aren’t loving what you do, then make a change, or several changes, until you find a job where the good feelings and accomplishments outnumber the not-so-good days.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: As I near retirement, I can say I have reached my long term professional goals – To work for a company that gives me the opportunity to be me without limitations, to experiment with new ideas and concepts without fear of failing and, most of all, to enjoy what I do.

My economic development background includes 34 years of experience in all phases of developing programs and creatively servicing job creation efforts.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: My professional inspiration can be summed up very easily – community – community – community. It is my individual inspiration and the inspiration of our organization to make this community as fine a place as possible to live, work, play, and raise a family. As a father of eight and a grandfather of eight, concern over our families and our job opportunities is paramount within ABCD Corp.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS:
My professional advice is simple and direct: Learn to roll with the punches and be both a realist and an optimist. In today’s business world, you will probably lose more than you win and be knocked down often. Learn to dust yourself off, get up, and charge again.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: At my age, long term can have a different meaning. But my goal remains the same – to be regarded by my peers as an organization and community leader with whom they would like to work, learn, develop, and partner. Donald Adam Ruggery, Sr.

Owner, president & chairman of the board
Ruggieri Enterprises LLC, d/b/a Spherion
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: In early 1992, at age 58, I began my own business. I decided to take my professional, public-sector experience and my own start-up investment capital to franchise a local office of what was then Personnel Pool. I initially purchased the franchise rights to Blair, Bedford, Cambria and Somerset Counties, and opened our first field office location in downtown Altoona in April 1992. Our franchise parent required us to change our name to INTERIM Personnel in July 1992 and once again in July 2000 to Spherion. In 2001, we became independent of Spherion as our bank and insurance agent by using capital reserves to complete a major contractual change.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL INSPIRATION: First, my faith in the Lord guides me in both my business and personal life. I always say, if you are not having fun, you should not be here. As long as I am having fun, I continue to be inspired.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: We strive and plan for continued growth year after year. In my opinion, a business without the plan, energy, and heart to grow is a business that will stagnate and die. Never be so satisfied that you are no longer hungry for growth.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: My long term goal is two-fold. First, to grow our market share in the staffing industry between Pittsburgh and Allentown to the point that we are recognized as the best staffing firm in the markets we service. Second, we purchased a small, 54 year-old candy making company, McIntyre’s Candies, in January 2005. We believe that we can grow this small, formerly “mom and pop business,” into a regional name that is recognized as the best candy between Pittsburgh and Allentown. I am excited to say that we launched our virtual candy store on the Internet at mcintyrescandies.com several weeks ago, and, from all initial indications, it is going to be a great business expansion tool.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT/AWARDS WON THIS YEAR: I was honored to be named the St. Francis University Small Business Person of the Year in 2005! In addition, Spherion Corp. recognized us as one of the top franchises in the nation, awarding us as a Performance Forum member. We need a culture in which Pa college graduates look to joining or, more importantly, to creating start-ups. It is clear that Pennsylvania has the “idea-engines” in its universities that can generate and contribute to such start-ups. HUNTINGDON
David K. Goodman, Jr.

President & CEO
DC Goodman & Sons Inc.
How long have you been with the family I started full-time in 1973 and worked in all phases of the business, including electrical, plumbing and the sprinkler systems. I went into management in the ’80s and helped dad with bids and purchasing. I’ve headed the company for 17 years.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: Almost two years (started in January of 2004).
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: I feel very fortunate to have had many individuals and opportunities that have shaped my personal and professional goals. Two experiences have been particularly inspiring. Very early in my career I had the opportunity to work at Fairchild Space as a technical illustrator for a satellite design proposal. As a very junior member of a dynamic, diverse and talented group of professionals I learned early the value of team-work. Years later the opportunity to work with a tremendously dedicated and conscientious group of professionals at the Nature Conservancy inspired me to pursue a life and career that made a difference.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: No matter how discouraging circumstances can be, don’t loose faith in your life, your work or the future. Your efforts and attitude can and do matter. Tammie Aaron-Barrada

President & CEO
Aaron Barrada Inc.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: I created PottieStickers in 2000 when I could not find a portable toilet training system for my son. After my husband’s death a year later I needed a source of income to raise our two children since he had no life insurance; so Aaron Barrada Inc. was formed.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: Looking at the faces of my two children every morning is all the inspiration anyone would need. One of my favorite sayings is “Obstacles are the things you see when you take your eyes off the goals!”
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: Compile a board of directors to guide you along the way. Owning a business is long lonely hard hours of work. It helps to have great people surrounding you to ask advice. Keep your focus. GFW - God, Family, Work is printed on all my products to remind me of the priorities in my life.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: To have our products as a household name. I have three more inventions and 60 more products I’d like to make to help parents and children. We donate a percentage of sales to cancer research in memory of my husband.

Gary Pratt
Owner
Le Jardin Florals
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: I found myself unemployed after 15 years as a recreation therapist. I landed a part-time job at a flower shop.
I parted this position a year later on good terms and started LE JARDIN Florals in June of 2000. I’ve been in business for five-and-a-half years.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: Using my inner God–given talents. I like what I’m doing. That is half the battle. I work extra long hours, but it doesn’t bother me. I get to be creative and at the same time satisfy my customers. I can plan a project and watch it grow. I can design a floral arrangement and know I did my best. I get to spend quality time with my mother. She loves to volunteer her time at the shop. We can solve the world’s problems some days it seems!
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: Start small – I started in a two-room shop with a soda-pop cooler for flowers. Get good at what you start out with, then expand to other areas of the business one step at a time. Keep it simple, especially when you start out on a low budget. It can be done. Never burn your bridges – some of my clients are people from my past, including my past boss at the flower shop I worked at. Think positive and believe in yourself even when others don’t. Always do the right thing – we all know right from wrong. Treat your customers good and be kind to everyone. Save money – even if it’s not a lot...It all adds up and word of mouth is the best advertising.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: To open the second and third floors of the building and expand the business. I plan to record a Christmas CD and have the debut at the opening of the second floor expansion next year. Who knows where dreams and God will lead you. If you have a dream, try it.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT/AWARDS WON THIS YEAR: I purchased a building in October of 2004 in downtown Greensburg. I looked for years and I always talked... ”When we move etc...” I thought positive! I finally found a commercial building with 10 parking spaces for an unbelievable price. I had money to put down and with help from some friends and my family we made it happen.

Joseph Santangelo

Manager, Landfill Gas Production
Keystone Renewable Energy LLC
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: I have been in my current position of Landfill Gas Production Manager for just over two years. I have been running the Greensburg office for two-and-a-half years. I have been with the company for six-and-a-half years.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: First it is to support my family. The drive to make the company profitable and reputable increases dramatically when you realize there are others dependant on you. Secondly, by taking landfill gas and using it as an energy source is amazing to me. For years, this same gas has been burned off and the energy just wasted. Now it is being used to heat homes or in a manufacturer’s procesing, or is converted to electricity and that is an accomplishment that is huge both environmentally and for the solid waste industry.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: Learn from your mistakes. Mistakes are going to be made. Don’t ignore the mistake, once it is identified. Fix it, learn from it and then move on. Too many times people get bogged down on their mistakes or mistakes by others and waste time and money that could be used to solve the problem and educate others on how to avoid the same problem/mistake in the future.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: To operate a company that is a leader in developing landfill gas projects.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT/AWARDS WON THIS YEAR: The top accomplishment was something I witnessed over the past few years by the owners of my company. They pulled together leaders from several different industries and financial institutions in western Pennsylvania to complete a very large and intricate financing arrangement to design, build and operate a landfill gas project. It was just an amazing accomplishment to watch them weather numerous storms and hurdles and never lose focus on the goal. After three years of sweat, hard work and dedication the financing was completed during the fall of 2005 and commercial operations are scheduled to begin this coming spring.

Rebecca Thorne
President & CEO
The Thorne Group Inc.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION: 12 years
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: I admire any person who can effectively lead others, get the job done and do it all with kindness, humility and a sense of humor. Everybody wins!
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: Stay focused. It’s the key to the completion of all successful projects.
Be kind. It brings out the best in most people and encourages respectful and constructive relationships.
Solve problems with the help of others. Never be afraid to say “I don’t know the answer so let’s find out.”
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: To continue to lead this very fine organization we have built.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT/AWARDS WON THIS YEAR: Named one of the Best 50 Women in Business in PA for 2005

REGION
Jake Corman

State senator
District 34

WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION: My family inspired me to enter public service and through my relationship with them and from my experiences working for Sen. Rick Santorum, I have dedicated my efforts to putting the interests of the people residing in the 34th district first and foremost.
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR OUR READERS: Be engaged in the legislative process. There are too many interest groups that are well engaged and entrenched in Harrisburg that do not place Pennsylvania’s business concerns first. To ensure that good public policy is developed in Harrisburg and that the commonwealth has a better business climate, small and large business owners and their employees must be engaged and have their voices heard.
LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL GOAL: I want to continue to represent the 34th Senatorial District in the state Senate and do all I can to make the district and the commonwealth a better place to live and do business.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENTS/AWARDS THIS YEAR: I was recently successful in moving my Senate Bill 435 through the Senate. This important legislation restores the landmark “Fair Share Act” lawsuit reform and provides that a defendant in a civil action is only responsible for its proportionate share.
