September DEP well permits report

BY SPENCER MYERS
Editor

There were 203 drilling permits issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in the Marcellus Business Central coverage area in July and August. Unless otherwise stated, all permits issued are for new, unconventional, horizontally- drilled natural gas wells.

This past two-month period’s activity is down compared to the May-June period, which saw 257 permits.

After some months of relative inactivity, Allegheny County is once again in the spotlight with 30 permits given to four drilling companies.

Also in southwest Pennsylvania, Washington County topped the counties for most activity with 77 permits. The activity is due in large part to a surge of permitting from Range Resources, which filed for 58 permits throughout the county, making them the most active driller for the period.

Also drilling in southwest Pennsylvania is Huntley & Huntley Energy Exploration, which despite having been around since 1912, hasn’t been issued a permit to drill in quite some time.

The northern tier is comparatively sleepy, with Tioga, Susquehanna and Bradford counties having 9, 15 and 12 permits respectively.

Information was provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s online database.
