Mutual Benefit Group

Huntingdon
Est. 1908

In 1908, 14 men whose businesses were flourishing in the railroad and oil industry “boomtown” of Corry, Pa. pooled their financial resources to protect their interests. They formed Corry Mutual Fire Insurance Company, which was eventually acquired by Huntingdon insurance entrepreneur W. Emmert Swigart. He renamed the company Mutual Benefit.

Today, Mutual Benefit serves nearly 75,000 policyholders in Pennsylvania and Maryland. The company achieved new records in 2016 in premium volume, assets and policyholder surplus, writing $118 million in insurance premiums through 250 independent agents. The firm employs 155 people.

Mutual Benefit is pleased to be the second carrier in 2016 to earn the Independent Agents and Brokers (IA&B) “Seal of Approval” for its agency agreement. Mutual Benefit also joined 70 other leading companies as a member of the Trusted Choice consumer branding program for independent insurance agents and brokers. During the year the company added an in- house analytics department to its home office and updated its homeowners’ insurance product offering.

Mutual Benefit has a rich legacy of community support. Over the years, Mutual Benefit has made sizeable contributions to area fire companies; J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and its new Convenient Care Center; Huntingdon County United Way; youth education programs at the Huntingdon Community Center and the Huntingdon County Library; Junior Achievement; and has served as a corporate sponsor for a number of community events and activities.
