Discovery Machine, Inc. (DMI) is the only artificial intelligence (AI) software development company in north central Pennsylvania.

In working with Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) based organizations, Anna Griffith, identified a need for knowledge acquisition technology that could support a methodology for the capture of information used in intelligent systems. Dr. Todd Griffith’s dissertation research in knowledge representation and problem solving provided the answer. The resulting combination led to the award of a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract from DARPA to prototype the technology. DMI was then founded in November of 1999 to achieve that goal.

DMI takes pride in giving back to the local community. For years DMI has sponsored a scholarship at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. They also sponsored a Williamsport Little League team in 2012 and 2013. Some of their additional sponsorships include Loyalsock Township Choir, Penn College Science Fair, Williamsport Business Association Fun in the Sun Event, Williamsport Fraternal Order of Police, Susquehanna Hospice and the Susquehanna Council Boy Scouts.

DMI employees also enjoy volunteering throughout the community. Anna Griffith, CEO of DMI, is also the president of Tech Futures of Northeast Pennsylvania. Every year, Tech Futures partners with Penn College to have a science festival dedicated to children in the local community. Several other employees are actively involved in the United Way, Williamsport’s Young Professional Group, the Williamsport Business Association and participate as coaches for soccer and baseballs teams.
