Susan Hartman

HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital

Susan Hartman has been the CEO at HealthSouth Nittany Valley since February 2005. She joined HealthSouth in 1994 and has worked in rehabilitation since 1990. Hartman received a bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College and a master of science from Johns Hopkins University.

Throughout her career, she has learned a great deal on the importance of learning to trust her instincts.

“I had to learn to trust my gut instinct early on and to recognize that intuition and past experience can have a role in decision making, despite the fact it’s not always easy to articulate their impact to others,” Hartman said. “Being decisive is a more important component of leadership than being agreeable.”

Prior to her position as CEO, Hartman held regional responsibilities in the area of business development and case management for HealthSouth. She is a former board member of the statewide Rehabilitation Community Provider Association and chair of the Medical Division Committee. She was also the past chair of the executive committee for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk.

Hartman resides in State College with her family where she enjoys living and working in a “dynamic community” that “has a strong interest in health education and prevention.” To propel her community’s interest in health education and prevention, she currently serves as the board chair for Centre Volunteers in Medicine.

“While my career has been dedicated to the role of physical rehabilitation after an illness or injury, a big part of our mission is education and prevention,” Hartman said. “If we can continue to promote that aspect of health maintenance, we will have served the community well.”
