American Eagle Paper Mills

Est. 1880 / Tyrone

Built in the 1880s, the Tyrone paper mill is one of the oldest working paper mills in the country. In 2001, the Westvaco paper mill unexpectedly shut its doors - an event that was catastrophic to hundreds of Blair County families. Several local investors banded together to form the new American Eagle Paper Mills (AEPM). These leaders felt confident they could revitalize the mill and put local families back to work.

In 2003, AEPM reopened its doors with 175 employees and a renewed purpose. Currently, 256 employees at AEPM manufacture and distribute approximately 90,000 tons of products per year.

The new leaders of AEPM pushed forward to build an organization that would sustain long-term jobs in Blair County by creating a world class recycled paper products company. Today, AEPM manufactures high quality uncoated paper by recycling recovered paper products that used to go in landfills such as drink and coffee cups, ice cream containers, mail envelopes, and catalogs. Each year AEPM purchases more than 100,000 tons of waste paper that is transformed into recycled paper.

In 2015 AEPM was awarded the Blair County Chamber of Commerce’s Sustainability Business Award of Distinction.
