Allegheny Ridge Corporation

Est. 1992 / Altoona

Allegheny Ridge Corporation (ARCorp) is a nonprofit organization on a mission to restore and develop historic, cultural and natural resources throughout twelve counties of the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area in central/western Pennsylvania.

They are one of twelve Heritage Areas in the Commonwealth, each highlighting Pennsylvania’s rich history and vital role in the Nation’s development. ARCorp’s signature initiative is the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway, a 320-mile corridor roughly following the path of the historic Main Line Canal and linked by more than 100 miles of hiking and biking trails, 300 miles of canoeing and kayaking opportunities, 12 hub communities and nationally designated historic resources. These recreation, heritage and community resources contribute mightily to PA’s economic sustainability as a tourism attraction, and help to attract and retain talent.

Activity in 2015 included raising more than $2.3M toward a $2.7M project to construct a pedestrian bridge over US Route 22 to connect 50 miles of bike trails into the Borough of Blairsville in Indiana County and position communities to benefit from a decade of nature- based revitalization work.

In 2015 ARCorp also secured more than $500,000 for construction of Juniata River canoe/ kayak access sites, campgrounds and other improvements in Mount Union and Mapleton in Huntingdon County, nominated the Raystown Branch of the Juniata as a National Park Service National Recreation Trail and participated in planning for the September 11 National Memorial Trail.
